The Exchange Club of Mullica Hill is a charter in Gloucester County and its goal is to serve others in need. Its core values are family, community and country. Even though the charter is in Mullica Hill, the club encompasses all of Gloucester County.
Each year the Exchange Club recognizes a Fireman of the Year in Gloucester County. Shawn Layton of Mantua was honored this year at a dinner in the American Legion in Mullica Hill, along with his family and fireman from Mantua Township. The club presented a plaque and a gift to Layton.
Frank McCall, NY/NJ District President of the Exchange Club, along with Robert Sharp, a national representative, were there to present the award to the fireman. Dennis Clooney from the American Legion also presented an award to Layton. Pete Scirrotto, mayor of Mantua and Louis Manzo, mayor of Harrison Township and Mark Gravinese, Harrison Township administrator were there to support the event.
Brian Hauss, district chief of the Mantua Township Fire Department offered some thoughts on Shawn Layton:
Layton joined the Barnsboro Fire Company in 2005 and transferred to the Mantua Township Fire District in 2007. In his 10 years with the Mantua Township Fire District, Layton has been an excellent asset to the department. Layton is the most active firefighter in the history of the Mantua Township Fire District responding to the more dispatched incidents than any other member.
On June 23, when Mantua Township was assaulted with the macroburst, Layton spent 24/7 handling incidents throughout the township assisting numerous residents.
Besides being a firefighter, Layton is also a leader in the community. He is a member of the Mantua Township Recreation Committee and the Senior Committee. He helps serve meals to senior citizens on a weekly basis.
Layton is an asset to the Mantua Township Fire District and the community as a whole. There is no doubt that he is a well-deserving recipient of the Gloucester County Firefighter of the Year award.
