The student is hospitalized with a fractured leg, according to school officials.

MONROE TWP. -- A 9-year-old middle school student is hospitalized after he was struck by a car Tuesday morning, a township school official confirmed.

The fifth-grader was crossing Main Street near Eldridge Avenue around 7:30 a.m. when he was hit by the vehicle, Monroe Superintendent Charles Earling reported.

The child was transported to Kennedy University Hospital with a leg fracture and then airlifted to Cooper University Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition, Earling said.

"We are waiting to hear back from his parents with an update on his condition," he said.

The student was walking to his bus stop at the time at the accident, Earling said.

The driver of the car, a Lincoln MKZ, stopped at the scene. The driver does not face charges, police said.

The police account of the incident stated that the student was waiting for his bus when he began walking in the roadway "for an unknown reason." The youth stepped in front of the vehicle, which could not stop in time, police said.

Counselors were on hand at the middle school for any students who needed to speak with someone about the incident.

School officials constantly stress the importance of safety when crossing streets and waiting for school buses, Earling noted.

"Safety is our number one goal in all of our schools," he said. "We take it seriously."

This was the second accident involving students in Gloucester County in the last week.

A Delsea Regional High School student was struck by the mirror of a passing truck as she waited at her bus stop last Tuesday, the first day of school in that district. The 14-year-old suffered a minor shoulder injury, police said.

The driver was issued motor vehicle summonses.
