GCIT sophomore takes gold at NAACP ACT-SO

Viola Taylor earned her medal in the traditional dance category

Gloucester County Institute of Technology's Viola Taylor, a sophomore in the School of Performing Arts Dance Program, won a gold medal at the 38th Annual NAACP ACT-SO National Competition Awards Ceremony.

She earned a gold medal for her performance in the traditional dance category. Viola also received a $2,000 scholarship and a Novella tablet.

The event was held in Cincinnati, Ohio from July 16-20.

According to the NAACP ACT-SO website, the NAACP's ACT-SO (Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics) is a year-long achievement program designed to recruit, stimulate, and encourage high academic and cultural achievement among African-American high school students.

ACT-SO includes 26 categories of competition in the sciences, humanities, business, and performing and visual arts. More than 260,000 young people have participated in the program since its inception. Learn more by visiting www.naacp.org/programs/entry/act-so.
