WOODBURY -- After a day and a half of deliberation, a jury has yet to deliver a verdict on James Stuart, the Deptford police officer charged with killing his friend.
Jurors reconvened Wednesday morning, having only had time for a few hours of discussion on Tuesday after both sides made their closing arguments. In the second day of deliberation, the jury reviewed footage of testimony in which Stuart admitted to shooting Compton in his Oak Valley home after a long night of drinking on Jan. 5, 2013.

The officer claims that he did not know the gun was loaded, saying he had made the pistol safe to show it to his friend earlier that night. After Compton died on Jan. 11, 2013, Stuart was charged with murder, manslaughter and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
The jury also asked Judge Robert Becker to clear up some questions about the legality of some of Stuart's actions that night -- specifically, whether it was legal for him to handle his off-duty weapon while intoxicated and whether it was a crime to point a gun at another person. Becker said he was not at liberty to explain further, however.
"What you have is all I can give you," said the judge.
The jury watched video of more than an hour of testimony from last week before breaking for the evening. Deliberation will continue Thursday morning.
