GLASSBORO -- The Dorothy L. Bullock School Children's Garden continues to give students a place to garden, grow and gather. The school celebrated "Jersey Fresh Farm to School Week" Sept. 21-25 with garden activities and visitors.
Students kicked-off the week wearing green or Bullock Garden shirts on Monday. They enjoyed garden samples on Tuesday, Bullock Garden spearmint in their fruit cups on Wednesday and Bullock Garden tomatoes in their taco salads on Thursday. On Wednesday, students voted on their favorite type of apples -- red or green. Green won out this time.
On Friday, students had a vacation day. However, teachers enjoyed a visit from State Department of Agriculture representatives in honor of "Jersey Fresh Farm to School Week." PTO President Meridith Daniel and her sons, Gabriel and Lucas, decided to make use of the day. Instead of taking the day off, they returned to meet the representatives and work in the garden. The garden has generated so much enthusiasm that teacher Sonya Harris said she saw families in the garden throughout the summer.
This September, classes are learning to make salsa with the bgarden ingredients. They alternate, taking turns by class and grade-level, under the supervision of classroom teachers and FoodCorps representative Laura Pennington. Learning activities will take place throughout the year, and Dorothy L. Bullock Families are invited to a Fall Harvest Night on Oct. 15 at 6 p.m. The school plans to continue developing a garden classroom/STEM lab this year as well.
The garden is funded by donations. Many thanks go out to the Bullock PTO for its recent donation of $400 earned through 2014-2015 box top collections. If you'd like to donate time or monetary support for the garden, contact teacher Sonya Harris at Dorothy L. Bullock School (sharris@glassboroschools.us). For ongoing information about the Dorothy L.
