Misericordia University students interns with MCFA, England
DALLAS, PA. -- In the United States, we call it soccer. To the rest of the world, it is known as football. In the realm of competitive sports, there is no comparison. Misericordia University rising senior David Malaquias, class of 2017, a sport management major and 6-foot-3-inch forward on the Cougars' soccer team is spending nine weeks this summer living out a player's dream as an intern with the Manchester County Football Association (MCFA). The MCFA is an arm of The Football Association (The FA), the governing body for the sport in all of England. The MCFA oversees professional and amateur football in the city of Manchester, where the urban population of 2.5 million people pretty much live and breathe the sport every day.
Malaquias spent five years living in Logan Township, and graduated from Kingsway Regional High School. He now lives in Gouldsboro, Pa.
Since starting work on May 31, Malaquias has attended games at the storied Old Trafford (Manchester United) and Etihad (Manchester City) stadiums. He also is enjoying the rare opportunity to experience nearly every department of the MCFA, which works with professional teams, offers certification courses for all levels of referees, coaches and volunteers, and provides referees that work from the grassroots leagues to the professional level.
Malaquias is also spending time in the Marketing and Communications Department, where the staff enriches the brand of the MCFA. He also will work with the Memberships and Discipline Department, where they take care of the teams joining the leagues hosted by MCFA and handle issues that happen on and off the field related to the players. His job shadowing includes spending time in the finance office and with CEO Colin Bridgford, who has been supportive and welcoming. He will earn six credits for his efforts.
Once he graduates in 2017, Malaquias hopes to land a job involved with soccer and simultaneously pursue an MBA, so to reach his sport management goal of becoming an executive for a professional soccer club or an agent for a league.
