Coffee & Cream opened in downtown Swedesboro Thursday, June 9.
SWEDESBORO -- Lines stretched out the front door Thursday morning as crowds gathered with excitement for the borough's newest downtown business.
Opening Coffee & Cream, which sells coffee, pastries and sandwiches, was inspired by a lack of options for a good cup of coffee, according to owner Sonya Smutz.
"Driving around, I wanted a cup of coffee and a sandwich," she said. "Not a rubber egg sandwich and a bitter cup of coffee. We needed a coffee house with good coffee and good food, and let's make it a meeting place too."
Swedesboro used to be home to Mugs, a popular coffee shop where locals would meet, but since it closed a few years ago there haven't been many options outside of the chain places.
With comfy chairs and couches, and al fresco dining options, Coffee & Cream hopes to bring that community meeting place feel, along with healthy, fresh food.
"Everything is homemade. We take a lot of pride in that," Smutz said.
Coffees are made with espresso beans roasted in Italy and flavored syrups are all chemical free. Hand-carved meats, homemade salad dressing and fresh fruit smoothies round out the menu.
Croissants, bagels and other baked goods are delivered daily from Le Bus Bakery in Philadelphia.
As Coffee & Cream held its 'soft opening' Thursday, locals lined up to get a taste of the coffee and a breakfast sandwich and took a seat in the couches to catch up with friends.
"We've been waiting years for a coffee place," Danielle Daley said as she sat with her friend sipping lattes. "It's so nice to have something in town. I can walk here!"
Coffee & Cream, located at 1334 Kings Highway, will hold its grand opening on Saturday.
