GLASSBORO -- A woman is suing Zallie Supermarkets and two of its supervisors claiming she was discriminated against because of her race and was fired from the store when she filed a complaint about it.

A lawsuit was filed in federal court in Camden by Glassboro resident Latoya J. Thompson, naming Zallie Supermarkets, Inc. -- which operates numerous ShopRite supermarkets in South Jersey --  as well as George Zallie and Mike Ross, supervisors of the Glassboro store.

Thompson claims that shortly after beginning work as a cashier at the Glassboro store in June 2014, she suffered intentional racial discrimination because she is black. According to Thompson's suit, she was subjected to "orally conveyed" ... racial epithets on a "frequent, pervasive, and daily basis," by coworkers and supervisors, including Zallie and Ross, throughout the workday. The lawsuit did not provide specifics on the alleged racial slurs.

In the suit, Thompson stated that Zallie Supermarkets, Inc., took no action to put an end to the discrimination prompting her to file a complaint on April 13, 2015 with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Shortly after, on June 28, Thompson was fired and she claims it was in retaliation for the complaint she filed.

The suit claims that as a direct result of the actions of Zallie Supermarkerts, Inc., Zallie, and Ross, Thompson suffered emotional distress, mental anguish, sleeplessness and economic loss.

Thompson is seeking an unspecified amount in compensatory damages, punitive damages, and court fees.

Representatives at Kober Law Firm, LLC, representing Thompson, did not immediately respond for comment.

No one from Zallie's Glassboro location was available for comment and legal representation has not been listed.
