Thomas J. Campbell was convicted of knifing two people in 2000, killing one and critically injuring the other.

WOODBURY -- The Supreme Court of New Jersey has refused to hear an appeal for a Delaware man convicted of stabbing a city man to death in 2000, the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office announced Wednesday.

Thomas J. Campbell, now 53, was convicted in 2003 of stabbing his ex-girlfriend, Kimberly Love, and her friend, George S. Jackson II, outside of Love's West Deptford home on Jan. 11, 2000. Jackson had been visiting Love when Campbell attacked them both with a knife. Campbell was sentenced to 30 years to life for Jackson's murder and an additional 20 years in prison for the attempted murder of Love.

The case was originally prosecuted by the late Michael S. Curwin, who retired from the GCPO in 2014 and died this past Saturday. Love, a statement from the agency notes, died of causes unrelated to the attack before the case even went to trial.

Campbell's petition to the supreme court was filed more than seven months past deadline, the GCPO said. It was the latest in a long string of appeals. The first time was in 2005, when the case was set for resentencing. An appellate panel upheld the original sentence in 2008, however, and Campbell filed another appeal, this time claiming there had been errors during jury selection and that he'd had ineffective legal representation. That appeal was shot down in 2012, and another was denied just over a year ago, in October 2014.

This latest ruling means that Campbell has exhausted his options for appeals to the state.

"This concludes the state of New Jersey's interest in any appeals of this matter," said Assistant Prosecutor Joseph Enos, who represents the GCPO in appeals of criminal convictions.
