The Herb Society of America (South Jersey Unit) will meet on Sunday, Nov. 15 at 1:30 p.m. in the Franklinville Community Center at 1584 Coles Mill Road (visible from Delsea Drive, Route 47) in Franklinville.
A presentation by National Herb Garden curator Piper Zettle, all about the "dangerous" dance we play with chile peppers will precede the business meeting.
Co-chairmen, Ines Terney and Lorraine Kiefer, announce that the program is open to the public and free of charge. For more information, call 856-694-4272 (Lorraine Kiefer). Since the program will begin promptly at 1:30 p.m., it is suggested that everyone come earlier to partake of refreshments and a social gathering time.
The speaker will discuss the cultural uses of the chile pepper from around the world including the medicinal research for modern applications. Zettel is the assistant curator of the National Herb Garden (NHG) in Washington D.C. She earned her bachelor of science in plant and wildlife management from the University of Maryland.
She has served two internships at the U.S. national arboretum in both the research and garden units. She has a passion for botany, horticulture and the practical usage of plants. One of her favorite duties within the NHG is choosing and planting the chile peppers for the chile border. This spring she and her volunteers planted over 70 varieties, 750 plants total. She looks forward to designing the display for next year, as the chill pepper is the the herb of the year.
The Herb Society of America, a nonprofit organization, would like to extend a welcome to potential new members. The purpose of the group is to stimulate interest in the knowledge and use of herbs, to develop cultural projects relating to herbs and share the experience of its members with the community. The unit also provides scholarships for horticulture students each spring. Check the national website at herbsociety.org for more information.
