A child suffered second-degree burns when his Halloween costume caught fire during a party on Saturday afternoon.

HARRISON TWP. -- A child suffered second-degree burns when his Halloween costume caught fire during a party on Saturday afternoon, county officials reported.

The 7-year-old boy was attending a Halloween party at a neighbor's house around 3:30 p.m. when he reached over a lit candle to take a piece of candy from a bowl.

The sleeve of his homemade costume caught fire, county fire officials said. The child ran out of the home followed by his mother. She knocked him to the ground and rolled him to smother the flames.

In doing so, the mother suffered second-degree burns to her right hand.

Both were transported by Gloucester County Emergency Medical Services Squad 8335 and Inspira Hospital Paramedic Unit Life Support 4 to Crozer-Chester Medical Center in Upland, Pennsylvania.

The child was treated for second- and third-degree burns to his arms, chest, neck and face. Hospital officials reported Monday afternoon that the child had been transferred to another facility.

The county fire marshal's office and Harrison Township fire officials are investigating the incident.
