GLASSBORO -- The Rowan University Concert Choir is joined by a new student vocal ensemble when it performs for the first time this season on Saturday, Oct. 24, at 8 p.m. in the university's Pfleeger Concert Hall.
Under the direction of Christopher B. Thomas, the choir presents "Music by Living Composers" and features works by Jeffery L. Ames, Eriks Esenvalds, Andrew Gavin, Stacey V. Gibbs, Arturs Maskats, Kevin A. Memley, Vytautas Miskinis, Gyorgy Orban, and Imant Raminsh. The program also welcomes Voces XII, a new student chamber choir making its debut at Rowan.
Additionally, the concert serves as a preview of the choir's appearance for the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), having earned an invitation to perform at the ACDA's regional conference in Boston in February.
At Rowan, Thomas is director of choral activities, assistant professor of music and conducts the Concert Choir. Under his direction, the choir, in addition to numerous on- and off-campus performances, has performed at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia, the New Jersey Music Educators Association State Conference (NJMEA), and toured the Czech Republic, Poland, and Hungary.
Prior to joining the faculty here, he served as Interim Director of Choral Activities at Indiana University of Pennsylvania where he conducted three choirs and taught graduate and undergraduate courses. As a baritone soloist, he has performed with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, Tucson Chamber Artists and the St. Andrew's Bach Society. Notable solo engagements have included Bach's B Minor Mass, Brahms' Ein Deutsches Requiem and a recital of American Art Song in Pennsylvania. Thomas received his Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting from the University of Arizona and the Bachelor of Music Education from Millikin University.
Pfleeger Concert Hall is located in Wilson Hall on the campus of Rowan University, Route 322 in Glassboro. Tickets are $10, general admission; $5, seniors/students/alumni/staff/military.
