"The Pillowman" is a story born in the dark and grainy recesses of the mind, where mystery, horror, and comedy are all wrapped up in one thought-provoking package.

That is how director Wade Brodsky describes the upcoming production of the award-winning drama at the Sketch Club of Woodbury that runs Nov. 13-15 at the playhouse at 433 Glover St.

"The Pillowman," written by Irish playwright Martin McDonagh, tells the tale of Katurian, a fiction writer living in a police state who is interrogated about the gruesome content of his short stories, and their similarities to a number of bizarre child murders occurring in his town. The play received two Tony Awards, an Olivier Award for Best New Play, and a New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best New Foreign Play.

Brodsky explains that the show is "first and foremost a play about the effects of child abuse and the negative impact parents can have on their children even when their intentions are good." The play, he says, is "dark," but not devoid of humor, bringing about awareness through shocking, thought-provoking moments.

"This show makes people think; it makes people move in their seats," he says. "I want our audiences to see this and have the story sit with them for a while, even after the last scene is over. I want people to see the reality of the deeper meaning of this story -- how our actions can affect those we are closest to."

Show times are Friday, Nov. 13, and Saturday, Nov. 14, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, Nov. 15, at 2 p.m. For tickets, go to sketchclubplayers.org, or call the theatre at 856-848-8089.
