MONROE TWP. -- Township school board vice president Richard "R.J." Amandeo has died after a lengthy battle with cancer, district officials announced Friday.
Amandeo, 39, served on the school board for three years.
"R.J.'s performance as a public servant was of the highest ideals and principles of what an elected official should be," said board president George N. Caruso in a statement. "His death is a major loss to his family, school district and community of Monroe Township."
Amandeo worked for Johnson Matthey in West Deptford and served as union president. He was also a member of the Williamstown Volunteer Fire Department, rising to the rank of lieutenant.
He was co-founder of the Monroe Township Youth Lacrosse programs for boys and girls and served as coach and referee in the township youth street hockey program.
School district superintendent Charles Earling recalled Amandeo's dedication to his community.
"R.J. was a kind and compassionate leader who led by example," Earling said. "He was beloved by students, staff and parents. He was always down to earth and spoke his mind. His impact was deep and will continue to be felt for many years to come."
Amandeo leaves behind his wife, Kristy, a son, Ricky, and a daughter, Karly.
Viewings are planned for Monday from 6 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. to noon at Farnelli Funeral Home, 504 N. Main St., Williamstown. A service will follow at noon.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Amandeo Children's Fund.
