Gavyn Connolly was struck after leaving a carnival with her friends just after 8 p.m.
WASHINGTON TWP. -- More than 5 months after a 15-year-old girl was struck and killed by a car, the man who police say was behind the wheel has been charged.
According to the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office, Sterling Knight, 22, has been arrested and charged with vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle accident.
Around 8 p.m. on April 23, Gavyn Connolly, a Timber Creek Regional High School student, and two other teens were leaving a carnival hosted by the Washington Township football program booster club in the parking lot of The Dump store on Route 42. Connolly was hit by Knight while crossing the highway as he drove his 2011 Toyota Yaris southbound in the shoulder of the highway where it approaches the intersection with Greentree Road, police said.
Police reported that Connolly was pronounced dead at Cooper Medical Center.
Knight, of Stratford, initially left the scene but returned a few minutes later. He was taken into custody on Friday as he arrived at his work place at a Somerdale Dunkin Donuts, according to Washington Township police. Knight was placed in the Salem County Jail in default of $50,000 bail.
