A variety of fish are being caught along the shore and the back bays.
The Delaware Bay has also seen a variety of fish caught recently.
Ken at Husted's Landing in Fairton told me that John Hitchner of Fairton caught a prize one, a 15-inch "puffer fish," also known as a "rabbit fish." He also caught a 17-inch weakfish.
Keith Kauffman of Fairton had an 18-inch bluefish while Don McCarthy of Quinton and Al Dooley of Millville caught a basketful of crabs in the creek.
Bob at the Anchor Marina reported that a fisherman on his first trip out this year caught six flounder to 24 inches, and also a few small weakfish, kings and blues were brought in.
The Fortescue fishing fleet has been mostly concentrating on flounder.
The fishing situation has been odd lately.
From what I hear, the flounder fishing has been good at the shore with some nice-sized fish being caught in the 4-to-7-pound range. The back bays and inlets are loaded with bait fish which is always a good sign. Live minnows appear to be the main bait.
They are catching a variety from Brigantine to Cape May, including lots of small weakfish, kingfish and some nice-size blues, as well as a striper here and there in the surf.
The deep-sea trolling in the canyons has never been better, especially for bluefin and yellowfin tuna and wahoo.
As long as the weather stays decent it should be an interesting next few days.
And it appears the drum season is about over.
