The school collected 85,856 pop tabs
Students and staff at Glassboro's Thomas E. Bowe School helped families of seriously ill children while protecting the environments this spring. The group collected 85,856
pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald House of Southern New Jersey's recycling program. Fourth-graders in teacher Michelle Graves' class stored and counted the tabs. This is the second year in which the school has participated in the program. Graves, whose son is a pediatric and adult cancer survivor, has collected tabs on 10 occasions.
The Ronald McDonald House uses the money gained from recycling the aluminum tabs to help operate the house. The organization's website notes there are approximately 763 tabs per pound and recycling yields between 35 and 70 cents a pound.
The house provides a home away from home for the families of seriously ill children, who are patients in South Jersey or Philadelphia hospitals. If the children are able to remain outside of the hospital during treatment, they may also stay at the Ronald McDonald House.
The house serves many New Jersey families, as well as those who come from other states and other countries. Accommodations include bedrooms, meals, laundry facilities and play areas. The Ronald McDonald House also provides family rooms in pediatric units of hospitals throughout Southern New Jersey.
