When the history of Gloucester County College (Rowan College at Gloucester County) is written, Virginia Scott should have her own chapter.

She was a member of the board of trustees for nearly 40 years, serving the roles of chairperson, secretary and treasurer. The school's STEM program is a fixture in Scott Hall, a campus building completed in her name four years ago.

Mrs. Scott, 82, one of the school's biggest boosters, died of cancer May 2. A Paulsboro native, she was a trailblazer for women in education, becoming the first chair of her gender on the New Jersey Council of Community Colleges.

Honored frequently, Mrs. Scott's awards included northeast region trustee of the year, the NJCCC Spirit Award and the President's Call to Service Award for volunteerism.

Dr. Fred Keating, the school's president, lauded Mrs. Scott for being a big part of the "student-centered culture" RCGC is well known for.

Keating added, "We didn't  just lose a board member, we lost a friend and an ally. She was a key supporter of our school and our curriculum."

Mrs. Scott loved the school, which is approaching the 50th anniversary of its founding, and never failed to promote it in the communities throughout Gloucester County and the region.

Underscoring her love for education, Mrs. Scott's family has established a scholarship fund in her name. Donations are being accepted by the Virginia N. Scott Scholarship Fund, Community Foundation of South Jersey, P.O. Box 446, Haddonfield N.J. 08033.

Delsea Regional sports fans will remember Gary Eichmann, who taught and coached there from 1964-1983 and broadcast high school sports during the same period on WJIC (Salem) radio.

He's now author Gary Eichmann, who, with his nephew Steven, has penned "When the Losers Actually Won," stories of the 25 title-winning Philadelphia championship teams through the eyes of a fan.

"As we are in another drought, we thought fans would want to keep a record of the times Philly teams did win," Eichmann says.
