2 hospitalized after turnpike crash, fire in South Jersey

Two people were transported to a hospital this afternoon after their vehicle ran off the road, hit an embankment and burst into flames on the New Jersey Turnpike.

EAST GREENWICH TWP. -- Two people were transported to Cooper University Hospital this afternoon after their vehicle ran off the road, hit an embankment and burst into flames on the New Jersey Turnpike, according to police.

The incident happened shortly before 1 p.m. at milemarker 14.9 northbound, said New Jersey State Police Capt. Stephen Jones.

The occupants were able to exit their SUV as emergency responders arrived on scene.

They were transported with possible arm, shoulder and hip injuries, Jones said.

No other vehicles were involved and no additional details were available as of Thursday afternoon.
