The library closed April 4 after smoke seeped in through the ventilation system.

FRANKLIN TWP. -- The township library is back open after smoke from a mulch fire temporarily closed the facility earlier this month.

The library reopened over the weekend following a thorough cleaning of the facility and air quality tests, library director Deborah Riether reported.

Smoldering mulch up against the building sent smoke into the library's ventilation system on April 4.

Servpro replaced ceiling tiles and insulation, cleaned carpeting and upholstery and wiped down walls. The books were not damaged.

The cost of cleanup at the township-owned building was covered by insurance, officials said.

The cause of the mulch fire remains unknown, though a tossed cigarette seems the likely culprit.

The library, located on Coles Mill Road, sees about 5,000 visitors and checks out 6,000-7,000 items each month. Thanks to its summer reading program, the library sees 10,000 patrons in July.
