In Salem County, again pick the real 2015 election winner | Letter

Charlotte Coleman writes to support the Republican in a rematch of a 2015 freeholder battle.

To the Editor:

Concerning the recent article "Potential Salem County freeholder election glitch ironed out," which states that Democrat Charles Hassler was allowed to amend his nominating petition to reflect that he's seeking a two-year unexpired term this fall, rather than a three-year full term. Both the Democrat and Republican slates are unopposed in the June 7 primary elections:

Here's a question for Salem County voters:

Do you really want a freeholder who seems to be so naive that he can't figure out how to file a correct petition for the office he is seeking?

How does this compare to his Republican two-year term opponent, Mellisa DeCastro, an intelligent young woman who has passed the bar exam in New Jersey and Washington, D.C.? She is deeply interested in her home county and wants to help make it the best it can be.

DeCastro worked her heart out to run for freeholder last November and was initially declared the winner over Hassler by seven votes. But her seat was later ruled vacant and taken away by a judge who declared a post-recount tie. In my opinion, the judge chose to not abide by New Jersey election regulations.

No wonder so many young people want nothing to do with a political system they perceive to be corrupt.

Melissa, don't let the incompetent career politicians discourage you. Keep on fighting for your right to serve your community!
