Dirt bike rider tries to outrun police | Greenwich crimelog

Police charged a 17-year-old Gibbstown dirt bike rider with multiple offenses after he led them on a chase through township streets on Sept. 9.

GREENWICH TWP. -- Authorities charged a 17-year-old Gibbstown dirt bike rider with multiple offenses after he led them on a chase through township streets on Sept. 9, police said.

Patrol officers spotted the bike on the roadway at Broad Street and Rambo Avenue traveling at a high rate of speed with no lights on. Officers tried to stop the rider as he continued down residential streets, hitting a top speed of 57 mph.

The driver finally stopped at Memorial Avenue and South School Street, where he was taken into custody, police said.

He was charged with eluding police, obstruction of justice and was issued six motor vehicle violations.

The juvenile was released to a parent and the dirt bike was impounded.

Other Greenwich police news:

  • A South School Street resident reported Sept. 10 that someone stole engagement and wedding rings from their home during a recent event at the residence. The victims provided police with information on who attended the event and evidence was retrieved from the scene. The rings were valued at $2,700.
  • Police conducting property checks near Floodgate Road spotted a suspicious vehicle stopped in the park area on Sept. 8. Officers found the occupants of the vehicle were consuming alcohol and issued summonses for having open alcohol containers in a park to a 22-year-old Swedesboro resident and an 18-year-old Woolwich resident.
  • A Baltimore, Maryland, woman was charged with hindering apprehension and issued several motor vehicle summonses following a traffic stop on Sept. 7. Police stopped Shantel M. Mayo, 33, on Interstate 295 for motor vehicle violations. During the stop, she allegedly gave police false information. She was processed and released pending a court date.
  • Nothing was reported stolen after a burglar entered a West Washington Street home. Police found that the intruder entered by removing a window air conditioner in a bedroom. The incident was reported Sept. 5.
  • Officers responded to North Poplar and Broad streets Sept. 4 for a gas line break. Contractors had ruptured a 2-inch gas line at the intersection. Additional officers were called in to evacuate a 2-block area around the break. No injuries were reported. Officers remained on scene for about 2 hours while the line was repaired. Gibbstown Fire Company also responded to the scene.

  • An East Broad Street resident reported Sept. 6 that someone stole about $400 from her pocketbook while it was in her home. Officers were given names of possible suspects who were in the home at the time of the theft. No arrests had been made as of this report.
  • A Paulsboro man spotted panhandling on Swedesboro Road was arrested on outstanding criminal warrants on Sept. 4. Officers patrolling on Swedesboro Road saw Joseph A. Hentz, 41, asking a woman walking in the area for money. After police confronted Hentz, a warrant check revealed warrants out of East Greenwich Township and Camden City. He was placed in Salem County Correctional Facility on $750 bail.
  • A woman spotted walking on Harmony Road was arrested on outstanding warrants and drug offenses. Officer Lindsay Davis spotted Wendy A. Pidgeon, 43, of Gibbstown on Sept. 16 and recognized her as someone wanted on a warrant. Investigation revealed she was wanted on a fugitive warrant from the Salem County Prosecutor's Office. During her arrest, police found less than 50 grams of a controlled dangerous substance and CDS paraphernalia. She was charged with CDS offenses and placed in Salem County Correctional Facility.
