More pros than cons to a Trump presidency | Letter

Ken Frank writes that if you overcome his need to be the biggest ego in the room, Donald Trump is a real business leader.

To the Editor:

In our popular culture -- which is more vexed and drifting than I ever remember -- the prospect of a President Donald Trump is gaining credibility. That possibility brings many pros and cons.

One big "con" is temperament. Trump has built an empire of which he is the king. Can the king of all he surveys ever be subject to the people he rules? Can his ego manage his temperament, or vice versa? In a world where the drive for attaining money rules, is he perceived as a God with a small "g"? To some, I suppose he is.

As for the "pros," there are many. Our current president never managed so much as a convenience store before taking over the world's largest economy. Barack Obama was a short-term U.S. senator, good looking and well spoken.

Trump, on the other hand, soared to the top of the business world with focus, drive and amazing savvy. He built businesses and worked deals with leaders around the planet. Say what you will, but the man gets things done.

Also, Trump has turned our feminized culture on its ear. Rude as it sounds sometimes, political correctness has not removed his spine. Some people enjoy seeing masculinity alive again, even with its warts.

I don't know if Donald Trump is the answer, but the left just offers more of the same. Sometimes I look at my country and feel we have fallen for celebrity over substance; the temporary over the eternal. If that's true, we are likely to get what we deserve.

When you're drifting, you grab on to anything you can to save you. Time will tell us if we've come to that.

Ken Frank
