Police identified the passenger killed in a single-vehicle crash on Wednesday.

ELK TWP. -- Police have identified the passenger killed Wednesday morning after the car she was riding in crashed into a tree.

Shakira DeLeon, 18, of Lindenwold, was riding in a blue 1994 Toyota Corolla traveling north on Route 55 when the vehicle -- being driven by 18-year-old Danail Garcia, 18, of Vineland -- veered off the road and crashed into a tree.

DeLeon died as a result of the impact and was pronounced dead at the scene, state police said. The vehicle, according to police, crashed in the woods throughout the median between the north- and southbound highways.

Garcia, who had been driving north on Route 55 near mile marker 47, was "responsive and alert" when police and paramedics arrived on scene, according to the New Jersey State Police. She was transported to Cooper University Hospital, however, her current condition is not known at this time.

The accident remains under investigation, officials said.
