WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP - Who knew that hours spent in silent reading could result in such boisterous celebration? As a reward for their collective reading efforts, the 20 Hurffville Elementary School students in Stacey Goldberg's and Stephanie Bruno's second-grade class were surprised by a visit from the Phillie Phanatic who made a raucous entrance during a school-wide assembly on Jan. 11 before presenting a plaque to the class for their accomplishment.
The Phanatic's visit was part of the 2015-16 Be a Phanatic About Reading literacy program presented by Comcast.
Founded in 2004, the program encourages students in grades K-12 to read for a minimum of 15 minutes a day to improve their literacy skills.
"We have been logging the time that our students have devoted on their own to reading," Goldberg said. "It was really exciting to be selected as a winning classroom and to see the students rewarded for their efforts."
After congratulating the winning class, the Phanatic acted out scenes from his book "The One-Man Band" which principal Jeff Pollock and Bruno narrated.
"We are wearing red, because red is for reading and red is for the Phillie Phanatic," Pollock said to the excited students. "We are grateful to Mrs. Goldberg and Mrs. Bruno for sharing this experience with us. If you practice, you get better. So keep up the good work. Keep reading!"
