WESTVILLE -- A fire that left a mother and her son homeless early Tuesday is being investigated by the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office and county fire marshal.

The fire was reported around 5:15 a.m. in a single-family home on High Street.

The blaze was quickly extinguished by Westville firefighters, but damage from the fire and suppression efforts left the structure uninhabitable, officials said.

The fire began in a bedroom and authorities are still trying to determine a cause.

The woman and her 12-year-old son were transported to Inspira Medical Center Woodbury for evaluation and released, according to the prosecutor's office.

The American Red Cross provided emergency assistance, including temporary lodging, for the mother and child.

As fire crews cleared the scene and a remediation company arrived to begin clean-up at the two-story home, investigators continued their work.

A neighbor walking past the scene expressed his concern for the displaced residents.

"That's a shame," he said. "And right after Christmas."
